How often should i turn my compost?
Question:its in a garbage can. how often should i turn it to make the process go the fastest?
Answers:
Yard and kitchen waste will turn to compost even if you never turn it, but you're right--turning will make it go much faster. If it's in a garbage can, you're lucky! Just find a lid for the can, secure it with a bungee cord and tip the thing over and roll it around a few times a week. That should stir it up enough to end up with finished compost in 6-8 weeks. If it's not all finished (because you keep adding things to it as it's working) you can use a milk crate to screen it. Basically, you just scoop the compost into the crate and shake it over a wheelbarrow. The good, finished compost will shake through and the unfinished stuff will stay in. Then just return it to the can and repeat the process.
Be careful of adding water. If it gets too wet oxygen cannot reach the materials and you will slow down your process. I would just drill a few holes in the bottom of the can and then leave it uncovered to the elements. Rain should give it plenty of moisture.
Also, make sure you have a good mix of greens and browns. All browns will compost too slowly--you need to have about 1/3 to 1/2 green (grass clippings, kitchen waste) to browns (leaves, twigs, etc) for it to go fastest.
Yay, you, for making the absolute best (and cheapest) fertilizer there is!
Twice per week and add water.
Once a week.
Garbage can?
With lots of holes knocked in it I hope.
Pile compost is turned every two weeks.
Drum compost like yours is every two days, but just a spin or two. It's a lot quicker, but you still have to do it every two days.
But you just have it sitting in a garbage can, I don't know.
Every 2 weeks. Horse manure is crucial for speeding up the process (nitrogen).
