How does Home Depot charge for cut lumber?

Question:I know Home Depot will cut lumber for free or a small charge. But if a 4x4 is 12 feet long and you only want 5 feet of it, how do they charge for the 5 feet? Do you have to pay for the entire 12 feet or just for the 5 feet?

Answers:
Home Depot will tell you that you have to buy a 6' piece then they will cut it to the length you want or need. They will not cut a 12' 4x4 for 5' when they should already have 6' lengths. Not all of the wood they have is priced by the ft.

It depends of what kind of lumber. Generally, all mill-stock (moldings, etc) is sold by the foot and you are charged only for the length of the piece you cut. The dimensional lumber (2x4, 4x4, etc.) is sold by the unit--you pay for the whole piece.
You pay for the 12 feet piece, and they will usually cut it once to your size specification for free. The 7 extra feet is yours to keep.
They don't like to cut one piece more than once or twice, cause they consider that 'project' cutting (they don't want to cut 12 sections of 1 foot pieces for your home video shelf project).
The home depot charges in two ways. 1 If you are buying select lumber they charge by the leaner foot. 2 If yo buy plywood or 2x4 etc. they will not charge you anything to cut it but you have to take both PCs. If you are still not sure ask them. they don't mind.
My Home Depot will do two cuts free. (when their saw isn't broken) You buy the piece of wood you want cut and take it all with you. I have not seen 4x4's shorter than 8'. You MAY be lucky enough to be there when they have a damaged piece that they will sell you cheaper.
Why dont you call the Home Depot and ask them? Prices vary by location so it is difficult to answer when we do not know where you live.
4 x 4 are available in smaller sizes.
If your purchase a piece of dimensional lumber, plywood, or 1x white wood, cedar, or PT you buy by the piece. If you buy 1x Premium(maple, red oak, poplar, cherry etc) then you buy by the foot. Sometimes they won't even charge for the cuts, alot of the times they will make one or 2 cuts for free
no they charge you by the feet that you buy.
