How do we put floor boards contained by the attic over the existing joist?
basically wondered if anyone knew what to do?
Answers: If its an older home next to 2x4s for joists instead of 2x6s or larger, you could have problems. If they are 2x4s and this is single for storage Id only place your storage over walls. Counting the joists to support the immensity of insulation, plywood and storage items over any kind of span is just asking for trouble. Our house use to be a rental and the tenant had all sorts of unwanted items stored in the attick. Our living room ceiling sags and weve got cracked plaster everywhere. We enjoy our items strategically placed over walls and they are only very neutral items like holiday decorations and pet carriers.
minus knowing the size of joist and the unsuported span of the joist cant say how safe it is? but you should be ok if you spread the mass... You can get T and G chip brd that is designed and sized for doing the livelihood -in the UK from B and Q! I would use a plank or board to spread my weight over the joists- until you get started- use screw to fix them- use a good quality self tape chip brd screw- a cordless drill driver will make life profusely easier for you- using T and G ther is no need to cut the brd to the joists and is similar to putting together a jigsaw - just make sure they are very well screwed into every joist and stager the joints like a lay a laminate floor to get a perfect result powerfully i just did the same, and i freshly cut the boards the width of the joist, and took into concideration the access hole size, and screewed them right to the existing joist. i think you be fine if you do indistinguishable
If it is just for stoarage you will be fine, dont try to make a living space up here. Just run the floor boards across the ceiling joists, making sure that the butt joints chain up over the joists. Have fun...
