How do you refinish a table?

Question:I got this table. It was free so I'm not complaining. I want to refinish it because there's scratches everywhere and it's fading in some spots. It's been through two families already and it was made in the 70's. How would I go about doing this? I need step by step instructions because I don't know crap about furniture and all that. I have 5 chairs that need to be done too.

Answers:
Go to your local home center and get a gel type stripper. You will also want a putty knife, rubber gloves some plastic to lay on the floor and lots of sandpaper. Follow the directions on the can of stripper and when its all done its ready for whatever finish you want to apply. Be patient, it takes lots of time to get it all sanded. You may want to buy a small vibrating palm sander like the "Mouse"

sand em good, get all the old varnish or paint off
varnish em
dry em
touch up sand if you feel the need
done
Pay attention to Robert D and make sure your energy level is up...Do some in the evening and keep it up and before you know it it is done...
I redid my kitchen table and it took an afternoon...I stripped it and lightly sanded then poly it..let dry overnight on a warm night...The chairs...good luck ...never did...I would also get a painters tool...it is only a couple of bucks but gets into the nooks and crannies...odd shaped hickymadoodle.
