What should the roof pitch be for a sheld with a ridge beam?
Question:I'm building a shed and have the walls up. In place of rafters I was going to use a ridge beam, but I'm not sure what the pitch, or angle, should be. I was hoping knowing the pitch would also tell me how high the ridge beam should be above the top wall plates.
Answers:
Make it easy on yourself. Use a simple 6/12 pitch, (45 degree's) and your ridge is at the top, and length depends on what over hang you are using. (12 " for example).
Go to your local lumber centre, with your wall dimensions, and they will help you with the correct lumber take-off needed, ridge beam included.
There. Done.
There is no best roof pitch for a shed with a ridge beam. Your roof pitch will either be determined by the size of the shed or what you find esthetically pleasing. (how it looks) Typically, the the higher the roof pitch the better its ability to shed rain, snow and tree fallout which in turn inhibits growth of molds and mosses. Adversely, a larger roof pitch costs more to build and shingle due to the increased roof area. Working on a steeper angle is more difficult as well. Check roofgenius.com for all you'll need to know. Good Luck.
