Decorating small spaces? I need ideas!?
Question:I'm moving, and will be renting and rooming with a friend.
Hey, I'll also take any tips on living with a roomie after having my own home! I haven't had a roommate in many, many years and that was a witchy female. ha.
He's a very nice, flexible guy. It's a large, older house, and I have a big upstairs bedroom. 15x12 I think.
He doesn't mind me hanging things on the wall, etc.
One issue I hope works out, is that the way the house is set up he has to walk thru my room to get to his music room and office. It's an old house, but nice. This worked out in the past with the last female. The rent is great, so I'll try it.
How to decorate this area? I'd like more privacy; ideas to make a screen of some sort?
I'd like to make a small sitting area, but it'll be cramped.
There are 12 ft ceilings -is it possible to elevate the double bed high like a bunkbed, and make an area under it? Could I put it on two sturdy dressers or do I need a frame?
There's little closet space ideas?
Answers:
Whoa. That screams bad from the start. I would put down some serious boundaries about going through your bedroom into his music room. That could really go South quickly.
The bed you are talking about is a loft bed. I agree with the PP about going to Ikea. They have several loft beds. You really should use a frame. Two dressers will likely not be strong enough to support a bed and a person. They have some fairly inexpensive beds at Ikea though.
You can use a tension rod (from Ikea) or a ceiling rod to create a screen. Both attach to the ceiling and you can hang curtains from them. It's a cheap and stylish way to create a privacy barrier.
Instead of a full blown sitting area you may just think of an oversized chair and a side table. I think you should have plenty of room for that.
As for closet space, you can either use dressers, armoires, or a closet system. Ikea, Lowes, Home Depot, and Target all have excellent custom closet systems. They don't give you more space but the space you have becomes much more useable. You could also get an armoire or an extra dresser. If your stuff isn't needed all year around you may consider storing it in under the bed containers or a chest.
