How are oval shaped doors made?

Question:I have been trying to buy some oval shaped doors for my cabinet and cannot seem to buy them or if i do find them they are well over priced and i was wondering how the outer timber is made into the oval shape(the strip around the edge of the door)? is there anyway i can make them myself?

Answers:
Rockler Woodworking and Hardware sells an "ellipse/circle router jig" that would cut your oval out of solid material. It can be found at : http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=...

The frame of the door is the difficult part. There are two common methods, both of which are time, labor and equipment intensive.

One method involves bending the wood for the frame to form the oval or round shape. The piece of wood that will be the frame is sliced into thin pieces. The pieces are steamed for some time to make them more pliable then bent around a jig in the shape of the finished frame. The pieces are glued back together on the jig and dried. The shape can be cut into the piece before or after the bending process depending upon the profile.

The second method involves cutting a series of curved pieces out of wide boards and joining them together to make a complete circle or oval. The profile is generally cut into the pieces in the process of cutting. This wastes a large amount of wood and requires a great deal of precision.

There is no easy way to make this piece. I'm afraid it is going to be rather costly.
They cut them out of oval trees. They're hard to find. Rare AND EXPENSIVE.
