How to fix an old window with these missing parts?
Question:I have an old window. And it's missing the rope pulls to the left and right side of it. You don't see these in modern windows. I saw how this can be repaired years ago on the program This Old House--that this can be easily repaired. I'm not ever sure what these pulls are call. Can someone tell me what they are, and how to fix it. Thanks!

Your first answer is the exact answer to your question. You really don't need to look any further other than your local ACE hardware for assistance with the parts.
The sash weights are probably still in the wall and with new rope can be repaired. You have to pull of the cover that is next to the sash to fish down in the wall to recover the weights. You can also replace the sash weight with new slides that will hold the window but the window sash must be removed, some of its material cut down to accomodated the slipes, install the slide and reinstall.
You would have to carefully remove the window guide trim from the inside, then remove the moveable sash. there should be a pocket with a removeable cover.if not, you can take the wall trim off to get at the back of the window frame. The weights should be inside the frame.
When you have it apart, scrape, clean, prime and paint the window track with an enamel (NOT LATEX) paint. Latex will make the window stick. Also make sure the wheels for the weight ropes are cleaned and freely spinning.
In my old house, I took the top sash weights out and added insulation to the back 1/2 of the pocket. Tied the weights onto the moveable sash with fresh rope and re-assembled the window frame. When re-installing the window guide trim, don't make it so tight that the window can't freely move.
