Is teflon tape or thread compound better for natural gas pipe fittings?
Question:I'm connecting a natural gas bbq to a existing line on my patio. I need to know which is better to use and why.

I always use both. Can never be too safe I saye when it comes to flamable gas. Just make sure you put the tape on first and also make sure you put it on the right way. Best way to tell is to have the end of the pipe your putting the tape facing you so you can see down the pipe. Then wrap the tape clockwise. If you put it on backwards the tape will peel off when you thread it in. Then put the dope on also clockwise so you don;t loosen the tape and thread it into the fitting. The pipedope is a sealer as well as a lubricant so the pipe with tighten easier. Always check with soapy water after you're done.
I have also preferred the tape because you know it's there, with the compound you don't know where it's oozing from so you don't know how well of a seal you have.
I use the tape.
if your worried about its seal. Just hook it up. Then get a cup of soapy water. Turn on the gas. Brush on the soapy water to the joint if it bubbles you need to do it again.
I use both (not at the same time). Tape is cleaner to use. Compound is good for gooping it on.
You can actually use both at the same time. My brother does fire sprinklers and they use teflon tape then a coating of pipe dope on top of the tape. never leaks!
They make both tape and thread compound for gas piping, both work well so does regular teflon thread compound, I don't know about teflon tape.
They use both. First the tape, then the compound.
