I want to paint my dresser- i took a layer of paint off and under it there's this weird layer??

Question:It was originally white, the paint was peeling so I pulled it off- instead of the wood right underneath, there's this layer of light brown smooth stuff- I think it might be covering real wood.
What is it?
How do I get it off of my dresser so i can paint it?
Do I even need to get rid of it?
And what paint should i use to paint, if I decide to paint on top of that?

Answers:
It sounds like wood laminate. I have a dresser just like that. Don't try to remove the laminate because you may damage the dresser. Just remove the old paint. Sand the laminate so the paint will stick better and not peel off. (Try Behr Porch and Floor paint for better adhesion). The paint color you choose should either blend in your room with the other colors or if you are making the dresser a focal point be a contrasting accent color. For example if your rooms are soft greens and blues then choose a color like soft white or beige to blend. If the dresser is to stand out then maybe yellow or a dark green or blue. with glossy white accents.

If it is hpl, high pressure laminate e.g. Formica, it would explain why the last paint didn't stick. New paint won't stick to it either.
Just sand until as smooth as you want, and then prime with a high adhesive primer. Paint any color you want. I would suggest a gloss, or semi-gloss for easy cleaning.

Don't bother going any further. You may end up with something larger than you want to tackle.
