Can I put an air conditioner in this window?

Question:Here is a crummy photograph of the window in question.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b137/x...

The area to the right is stationary and does not open at all. The middle section is covered by a screen and is normally closed by sliding the left vertical section in front of it. The maximum width of the open area is just a hair under 11 inches.

Is there a window mounted air conditioner that will fit such a small area? (Portable ones are a bit pricey). The room that needs to be cooled is roughly 12x12 as well, so I could live with 5,000 BTU or less even.

Thanks! :D

You may be better off cutting a hole in the wall to mount the unit. It will be tough to insulate around the unit in this type of window. Blocking a window is never a good idea in case of fire. Purchase a unit that runs on 220V not 110V. The 220 unit uses much less electricity. Have an electrician install the 220V wiring.
Also, look at a mini split A/C unit. Works on much the same principle as a central A/C unit. You will probably want a unit that has heat as well.

Home Depot carries Ac's and I believe that they carry one that will fit your space, take your tape measure with you and measure it in the store, sometimes the measurements are not posted. 5,000 BTU should work well in that area. I looked at your photo and did not see a electrical outlet. You may need to purchase an extension cord, with the right ampage that the ac carries, one just long enough to reach the outlet, you could possibly splice the cord in
yes
