Questions on stripping paint off furniture!?
Question:I have a set of end tables and a coffee table which have been painted and I would like to strip the paint and stain the wood. If I use some type of gel paint stripper, will this also remove the shiny finish of the tables which was painted over? My hope is to remove all finish and to stain the tables... Is this possible just by using a stripping gel?

Yes use paint stripper and you may need to sand the peice down as well. Then depending on what color you go with to put back on you may need to use a primer. check at your local hardware store they will have all the info you need. And tips for getting it done.

The paint stripper will take it back to bare wood. May take a few coats, but it will do it. Wear eye protection when brushing it on, it's strong stuff. And gloves.
You will be stripping down to the bare wood. Just make sure to follow the directions and do it in a well ventilated area. Have lots of rags handy for the mess and make sure you lay it on heavy and allow plenty of time for it to work.
Have a wire brush handy to get into crevices. Make sure to wear protective gloves.
yes might have to do it more than once to complete the job let the stripper set for like 5 10 minuites this will help.
You should you's stripper not stripper gel i heard that stuff really dosen't work that well i tryed it once it messed up my chest so now i just use the ace hardware brand stripper and a good stain is tomson water seal i like that stuff well i hope your tables look nice!!
As others say, you will have to strip. Critristrip is much less obnoxious than standard MEK stripper. Find it at the home center. Once you have all the old finish off, sand with 150 grit sand paper, start with courser if you have nicks and scratches to remove. Apply stain of your choice, and following both the stain and the finish manufacturers recommendations, top the stain off with a couple finish coats, oil based polyurethane is tough and chemical resistant but dries slowly so you need to protect the drying piece from dust.
Yes, it will also remove a finish. Using paint remover is the hardest part of refinishing furniture. It is difficult and time consuming to scrape all the paint off the wood and from cracks after the paint remover is applied. Then the wood needs to be sanded with both rough (for scratches and dents) and fine sandpaper before it can be stained. It also needs a protective coating (unless the stain contains it) after the stain is dry and to keep spills from making marks and to prevent scratching. A spray-on protecting surface can be bought that is shiny or satiny, which needs to be sprayed on outside when there is not much wind.
