Repairing a Roof?
Question:I have a "Farm House" that is leaking over the staircase going to the upstairs. The house has a few layers of shingles already and a flat tar roof over the staircase . the flat roof has a valley from the peak of the main house ... (sorry for a bad description) ..
I've tared the flat roof and valley once already, but it is still leaking - I cannot afford to put another roof on till next year - so how can I fix this? Can I take off the flat roof and replace it - and build a valley back to the shingled roof -- without taking that off?
Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated!! I cannot afford much right now - since I'm saving for the entire replacement. Its a 110 yr old house, with good plaster and woodwork, so I don't want it to get ruined.
You can see what I'm talking about at: http://www.watersedgedewitt.com/roof.jpg...
Its a dark picture - but you can see the roof lines and what I'm dealing with.
Answers:
just after it rains go up on the flat roof as it dries look for wet cracks or places that when you step on water comes out patch with roofing cement/ flashing cement
or
contact a roofing contractor have them come out give you a quote there are some wonderful roofing products out there.
you might be able to pick his brain and do it yourself
It may be leaking somewhere else and migrating to that area.
Check the ridge and valleys. And make sure there is no debris that could make the water back up under the roofing.
see if you can find the leak under the roof from the inside, at least then you'll know where its coming from hopefully, and if need be nail a small piece of one by three at an opposing angle so the water will stop there and then at least you have it slightly under control
