How to frame window in brick veneer wall?

Question:i am replacing a window in a brick veneer wall with a larger window.. i had thought the window itself would be attached directly to the studs..

but my current window appears to be attached to some filler strips (not sure what to call them).. but it is not attached to the framing studs.. these strips are attached to the studs but they appear to extend out through the gap between the studs and the veneer wall.. so the window is attached to these.. is this the correct way to do this on a veneer wall? any other information that will help answer this? thanks.

Answers:
normally they attach to the sheathing over the stud... you are going to have to frame the hole, through a much larger hole cut into the brick, if the mortor cleans off easily, you can chip out & re brick, but the easy in me says cut a nice hole in the brick, & trim it out with siding.. gap around window, return to cover brick ledge, & picture frame around hole cutout on face of brick!
