How much should a new central air conditioning unit cost?

Question:I'm in Canada but will take estimates from U.S.

Answers:
There are too many factors (heat and cooling load, size of house, difficulty of installation of duct/units, type of system) for me or anyone else here on the Internet to give you a good answer to this question. Most contractors in the US anyway, give free estimates. Beware the low estimate may not always be the best. Poor workmanship and charges for "concealed conditions" can cost a lot more money that going with a reputable contractor.

Just the unit itself will cost around $2,000--3,000 dollars. It depends also on the tonage of the unit. A 5 ton a/c can cool a house of about 3, 000 square feet. I recently installed a 5-ton heating and cooling system in my home with re-ducting of the whole house. It came out to around $14,000. So , just a change out should run you maybe $5,000 bucks roughly I would think.
Always get quotes from different companies But I will tell you are looking at $5,000 to $10,000 depending on what type of unit your what the higher end units are normally Geo thermos.
