Need to find a way to keep bees off hummingbird feeder, but how?
Question:I have tried vasoline, they dont seem to like it ,but still surround the feeder, Anybody have any advise on what I should do?
Answers:
let them, bees feed us by polination and a lot of honey bees are dying , try putting out multible feeders so if bees are on one, the birds can go to another
I was told to try vegetable oil. Not sure if it will be much different from the vasoline, but maybe worth a try?

Most hummingbird feeders have design flaws which allow bees, wasps and yellow jackets easy access to the suger (syrup) used for the hummingbirds.
Some tests have shown that bees are attracted to the color yellow. Most of the hummingbird feeders made today have some yellow in them, ie. the flower ports. You could paint these red and it may solve your problem.
My suggestion would be to change your feeder. I personally use the hummzinger. Bees, wasps and yellow Jackets can't reach the syrup because of the basin style enclosure, but even the smallest hummingbird can reach it with no problems. The nice part about the feeder is that it has a resting pearch surrounding the feeder. So now the hummingbirds will actually sit to feed, giving you more time to enjoy them.
Here's a website where you can see the hummzinger hummingbird feeders.

Hope This helps. Good Luck and Enjoy those hummingbirds.
I heard on the news you guys have a big problem with your bee population dying, don't use insecticides I guess.Tiger and trekkies ideas sound good.
Definitely get one of the basin style feeders. I have one, and love it. It is so easy to clean! I like being able to see their little tongues lap the nectar up too!
If you are putting red dye in your feeder, please stop. Hummers are attracted to red, but chances are most feeders are already red, and the dye is both not necessary and not good for such a little digestive system.
Their Is a device you can put between your hook up and feeder to keep bees and ants out that you can fill with water.I found this in a catalog, but they also have a web site.
www.AudubonWorkshop.com. they are called an ant trap and cost 7.95 + s&h or you can look at your local garden center for a similar device. Putting vasoline or oil on the pole or hanger only works for ants not wasps and bees.good luck.
