it will look like very dark, rich soil and have a deep earthy smell to it. and if it's really good compost, it will be very damp.
It's like coarse soil.

All gardens should have a compost heap. Apart from being somewhere to throw vegetable garbage the compost is a great way of replenishing the garden soil in a natural way.
