Put a panel fence up through a large tree?
Question:I am putting up a 6 ft, wood panel fence around my property, there is a large maple tree in the path i want the fence to go. I do not want to go around the tree, i want to line it up to the tree.
In other words i want to cut the fence and maybe drill it into the side of the tree and on the other side continue. Is this done, or am i out of my mind. Please do not tell me to around the tree.

Here's some optional plans.
Build the fence about 2 feet from the tree. any closer and you will have root problems when sinking the posts.
Then find a good garden supply and ask which type of privit or hedge type plant to use that will fill in the space and provide enough privacy... (something thorny perhaps?)
Or: put post closest to tree about 3 feet from tree...then the post BEFORE that one 8 feet back.
This will result in this arrangement -
Post -8'- Post-3' -Tree.
Then, using 12 foot fence rail, and STARTING at the Post-8-Post span, extend your fence rails OVER the post closest to tree and then to your tree. Measure and Trim off the extra. Looks a bit like this.
--------Rails----- Tree
Post-8'-Post-3'
Put a vertical piece across the ends of the rails at tree.
( 3 - 2x6 rails on end will give great strength for the 11' run and keep that 3 foot extent ion strong).
As tree grows you just whack some fence off to accommodate.
thats easy enough just use a sting from one corner to the tree and then the other side of the tree out to the other corner burry the 4x4 posts along the string and there you go
Trees are living and growing beings. If you wish to make yours a part of the line then you must be willing to build in an adjustable section. This is not a do it and leave it thing. The best thing I've seen is to build to and from the tree with suspended gates-like a double swing gate.In that scenario you have the option to custom mold the fence to the tree as it changes-without the headache of replanting the 4x4 posts. Be sure to build the gates so that the main frames are away from any incursions by the trunk of the tree. The space between the frames(to the trunk) is your leway to manipulate as things change.
