Are you talking about the normal 110V wall outlet? If so, then you are correct. Your dryer probably runs on 220V and you will need a 220V line run from the breaker box to a new outlet.
Here is an example of such a receptacle:

One of the prongs is "L" shaped right?
change one of them, but theyre supposed to be 4 prong
you can change the cord on the dryer to match the recepticle on the wall, very eazy job
thats common change the one easiest to change. get heavy duty an be careful

Any hardware or appliance store will have the correct cord. Less than $20.00 (US).
drier has 1 prong going side ways its a 220 volt your out lets are 110 volt look for out let close by that is same style or wire in dedicated line you can hard wire it in but thats another story. home/garden stores have good books showing how. Dave. Luck
either the plug or the outlet is for a range/stove. the difference is the common terminal, (the middle one), on one is flat, like the other two, and on the other it is "L" shaped. this is a simple fix, just go to the hardware store and buy one that looks like your wall outlet, and install it on your dryer.
Keep this in mind... These 2 "pig tails" are entirely different!
A range cord the one with three straight blades is a 50 amp cord.
The dryer the one with the "L" shaped center pin is only 30 amps.
30 amps CAN NOT BE USED ON RANGES they melt due to to much draw through the wire.
Either can be used on a dryer
By the way To make the wiring up to "code" as of 1996 it would need to be 4 wire.
3 wire is grand fathered in before 1996
