Answers:
Plaster dries harder than drywall. Concrete veneer (stucco)is harder still. All are applied the same way.

if you are going to have a fireplace just for looks..it is okay..however, if you are going to have a functional fireplace you must be very carefull about the fire box and the insulation between the fire box and the surrounding structure.. you see the heat from the fire place can and will dry out the wood structure and at some point that dry wood becomes a tinderbox of fire fuel.. in other words it will catch fire and burn.. so be careful about how you construct.. do it right and you will be fine..do it wrong and you will suffer.. Good luck
Drywall mud and plaster are not the same. Plaster is actually several layers of different materials and is very hard. It is not sand-able like drywall mud. Plaster cures more like concrete while most drywall mud air dries.
If you used drywall mud in the application around the fireplace it would crack. I believe the material you need is closer to plaster or stucco.
You can stucco over the brick. It's better to stucco it than cement.
No because a fire palce has to have a fire wall. Drywall mud and brick will not keep the heat of a fireplace from burning down your house.
Looks like Dryvit.
what you are seeing is stucco, not drywall, one is made of gyptson and one of mortar. Both require a trained workman.
