Any yard equipment with a motor is loud. I don't know why they make them that way, I guess maybe they have to get alot of power in a little space?
We have 5 dethatching machines, They're not any louder than a lawn mower. If the muffler falls off than they're really loud.
A dethatching machine has several rows of tines underneath.
As they spin, they pull you along. Walking at a "normal" speed you will feel the resistence, that's what makes it work. The faster you walk, the less debris you'll get out of the lawn.
Actually a dethatching machine is called a "Lawn Comber" as it combs the grass it brings the dead grass & other debris up to the top of the grass to be raked up.
When you cut your lawn and leave the clipping on the lawn, you should dethatch your lawn every year. If you bag the grass, than dethatching should be done every other year.
Mulching your grass is NOT good for your lawn. each time you cut the grass using a mulching mower, your depositing a thin layer of mulched grass on the ground around the blades of grass comming out off the ground. Eventually it's going to prevent water, air & nuitrents getting to the grass roots, thus killing your lawn. That's why dethaching is required.
In the "Green Industry" Dethatching is becomming a thing of the past. Aeration is now replacing dethaching. It's believed that by aerating your lawn is better for it. Aerating opens up the soil, brings micro-organisms to the surface where they attack the mulch and digest it. It also allows nuitrents, water & air to get to the grass roots.
