Lost Fortress Combination lock to 40 numbers(three spin cheap kind) any ideas how to break the combination?

Slam it with a massive hammer. a downward stroke away from the shackle.
if that doesn't work, spray it with freom and then hit it, that will work for sure, if you can get freon, or something like it.
To solve I would not know if you cannot hear the tumblers settle. However, you can remove certain combinations with some realm of certainty.
It is unlikely they would use one number for all three required. So numbers such as, "000" or " 555" would be the combination. It is further unlikely numbers such as, " 119" or "644" would be it either. so you could remove all three digit numbers that are the same, and all combinations using the same number in position 1&2 or 2&3.
I also think you can remove all sequencial combination ( both forward and reverse). Such as, " 234" and "876"
I also think, if you look to the serial number they will avoid any three digit combination within that serial number. So if serial number is " 125440305" then we can take all three digit combos and eliminate them. Such as, " 125, 254, 544, 440, 403, 030, 305," and their reverse.
Maybe it is easier to take it to a locksmith - they may have a technique for finding the tumbler positions.
I saw a demonstration on how to break open a combo lock on YouTube. The guy has a system that greatly narrows down the possibilities.

we bought 10 of these locks at a garage sale, and took them all to a lock smith, he just redid the numbers to unlock them, it was easy and they are all the same numbers, we have one on the , the garage, our storage building, the lake house, and the deer lease, we never forget the code now, as they are all the same, and you would never know it, and it would be almost impossible to figure it out, he only charged us 2$ a lock so for 20 bucks we have 10 good locks with great codes...good luck Becky

Easy, but will take a little time and patience.
Start with all tumblers on the lowest number - "000", then advance the tumbler on the far right one digit at a time, like the odometer on the car advancing one mile at a time, to "001", check to see if it will open, if it doesn't, advance to "002". Do this until you have reached the highest number on the right tumbler, then, just as the far right tumbler is about to turn back to "0", advance it and the next tumbler one digit to "010". It is like you just counted from one to ten, using the tumblers to count. Continue this until you have advanced all tumblers through all numbers, one at a time. You will have attempted every possible combination.
For example, if you have three tumblers, each with "0" through "9", then the first attempted combination will be "000", and the last number will be "999". There are 1000 possibilities, and you will have tried each one as you count from one to one thousand (but, actually, you will stop at the number that opens the lock).
