What is the best way to build a small wooden box with 1/4 plywood. I used a brad nailer but that is hard!?
Question:I'm trying to make a try to hold 3 decks of cards for a game. I have 1/4" plywood cut to the sizes I need. I'm trying to find a good way to attach the dividers (2) when they are only 1/4"! Trying to pop a brad in there is hard to do with out it going out the side! Glue wouldn't hold up. I could create a groove to set it in, but I still would like to pop a nail or brad in there to hold it together. And the side and back couldn't be put in a groove.
Answers:
My Dad built me a small toolbox out of 1/4" ply with a 1" by 2 handle that he sawed a curve in to fit the hand.
He glued and stapled it together.
Did it all in front of me in about 10-15 minutes.
That was maybe 15 years ago. Maybe longer. I still have the box.
I'll send you a pic of it, if you want.
You know, it's just a plywood box type tool carrier.
But my Dad was somewhat of an artisan, and for that, I'm really proud of the box he built me quickly.
He's 86 now and still in really good shape.
Brace the corners with something more substantial. You could use moldings or, depending upon the size of the box, 1x or 2x dimensional lumber. This will give your brads something to nail into. Hope this helps.
I've done this and it can be hard, but a little planing goes a long way.
I bought really good 5 layer plywood at a hobby supply house.
Some lumber stores also carry this high quality wood.
I used a very shallow 1/8" deep groove as it increased strength by 100%
I then carefully drilled 1/16" pilot holes thru the grooves,
I then installed the shelves with glue and tiny decorative brass nails.
You could use finishing brads and putty the holes later.
Next I used rubber bands and string to hold everything together overnight.
gorilla glue
Try using epoxy. It comes in various curing times. I use it quite often in my hobby.
