Would trying to jack my house up and build a basement be easy?

Question:

Answers:
My grandfather, who immigrated from Denmark, built his house with local rock as foundation.(1926) Then hand dug the basement after the house was built, because of the coldness of the N. Dakota region. The basement was large enough for the coal shuttle and furnace, washing machine, drying lines for laundry, storage of canned goods, and even an extra bedroom. My mother and sister shared the bedroom. His masonry work was a marvel. Your task would not be easy but it can be done.

Not easy, but you can do it. You might hire a house mover to raise it, if you are unsure how to do it.
No this is not an easy thing to do. Undergoing a task this size requires professionals and permits. The most cost effective way if possible is to pick-up and move the house to another location either on your lot or somewhere close. Then have a basement install to fit your house and then move the house back. This would be the most cost effective way. Hope this helps.
Actually, your contractor can use house Jacks to do this. on the other hand, if you have the room on your property, and have opted to move the house to build the basement. It really would be easier to leave this house where it is while you build the basement at the New Location, then just move the house there and your done .. less moving of the house, less risk and less time ... $$
Also, the old basement can be dismantled and the dirt from the new basement digout can be used to fill in the old one.

I had my basement rebuilt though, using housejacks to raise the house while the repairs went on, then it was just lower onto the foundation/ basement.
NO
If you get in touch with a concrete contractor who does basements they will have a mover that they work with. This is the only way to go. Its not a Diy project that is for sure. It is not an outrageous idea either. We seem to get these about every 3 years its strange but it has been 3 years since each job for about 10 years now..weird. Anyway its all the rage out here in CA now. Real estate is so crazy people are looking to add space to their house and the only place the can go is down.
Please make sure to check references pay special attention to time frames. This is an extremely complex project and an inexperienced contractor can hold the project up for months. By the way in mostly all cases you can still live in the house during construction.
Good luck.
It will likely kill you, if you have to ask the question. Get professional help. (for the basement)
One of the most dangerous and deadly things to try to do with a house. Its hard to even get insurance to do it professionally.
It really requires years of experience, and lots of skills.
