Back door concrete landing pad question...?
Question:I am relandscaping my backyard and need to redo the back porch. The dirt ground is 6" below the screed line (which is about 9" to the slab) and relatively level. The door is 36" wide and swings inward. My question is: What is, if any, the typical measurements to pour a concrete landing pad (without hassling with the city to get the building codes). Thickness, length, and width are my main questions. Thanks
Answers:
Per the CBC 1003.3.1.7 a landing shall have a width not less than the width of the door. For residential the length need not exceed 36".
Per the ICBO code, section R312.2 the width of the landing shall not be less than the door served with a minimum dimension of 36" in the direction of travel.
Per the CABO code, North Carolina edition, Section 312: a landing shall be 3'x3'.
Standard Engineering practice: The thickness should be at least 4" (6" if you have expansive soils). Use 6x6 10/10 WWF or #3 rebar @ 12" o.c. (3 bars eq. spaced each direction) suspended mid slab.
i would frame it out at 48x48.this is a typical slab for an entry, and width and length are more than adequate for the code in any city.
I think the size is up to you but you want it to be large enough that you can comfortably move around. i probably would make it about 8inch's wider then the door and at least that length wise. so perhaps a 40 x 40 pad. make it out and see if you think that will be large enough. typically here they use about 4 inches of crushes stone under the slab and reinforce it with wire. the slab should be at least 6 inches of cement
