Can I install vinyl siding onto asphalt sheathing?
Question:Why would asphalt sheathing be used in place of plywood? It doesn't seem to be very strong. I can pull my nails right out of it.
Answers:
Yes you can if you hit the studs with a nail long enough to penetrate 1 '" into the stud.
What your talking about is asphalt impregnated sheathing, 1/2" compressed wood fibers with a black front, usually a IKO product, in the past it was used to fill in between plywood ,used on the corners.
I call it "rat board" vermin will make a lovely home with it.
I suggest removing and replace with a 7/16" OSB, before residing.
I dont know why they used asphalt other than maybe the cost? Anyway asphalt gets really hot and to install vinyl over top it will you siding will likely warp very badly in hot weather that is why they put core board or fan fold styro-foam on before siding to insulate the vinyl from the heat. hth
This type of sheathing is probably a poly-iso insulation board, with an asphalt paper on the outside face - what ever your original siding was probably attached through this board to the studs (I hope). You can install your vinyl the same way - every couple of fasteners should be long enough to hit the studs. This insulation board should also have the joints taped to prevent air infiltration or you should install an air barrier (like Typek or another house wrap) before installing your new siding.
I believe you are supposed to use liquid nail glue instead of nails.
