How do you repair a very old mirror, the silver is peeling off?

Question:i have this beautiful old mirror with blue glass around the edge, and the silver part is peeling. how do i restore this?

Answers:
Restoring the silvering on a mirror can only be done by a professional. It is very expensive. If it is only a small piece here and there you can use a little piece of aluminum foil for camoflage but that will only work if it is a small area. If the silver is flaking then first use some clear nail polish and paint over the edges to prevent more from coming off then stick the foil over top. Good luck.

This question should be asked at a hardware store or a museum; perhaps a librarian can help Go forth.
It is not a DIY job.
I 'd just replace it.
Locate a 'glass shop' that sells and installs mirrors in the yellow pages. Call and ask if they do "resilvering" on old mirrors.

Resilvering is not a DIY project. Take it to the shop and they will look at it and tell if the work can or should be done. If the mirror has numerous small surface scratches it might not look good when finished. all the scratches will be magnified by the new silvering.
