How do you screw/fix timber into cement or brick etc? cheers?
Question:If i wanted to screw a timber frame into cement foundations, or a door jam into brick, what is the process, are there special screws, bolts, drills etc? thanks
Answers:
You can use Rawl Plugs or dyno bolts/screws.
You drill a hole in the concrete or brick to fit the plug or bolt/screw body, insert the plug or boby into the hole.
as you fasten the screw or bolt the body or plug expands to a very tight fit, preventing pull out.
if you do get pull out, that is when the fasner pulls the plug or body out of the hole, you have drilled the hole too big, you then must buy and fit a bigger bolt or thicker plug, or simply drill a new smaller hole near to the old one with a smaller drill.
plugs are best if you have to tap them in lightly with a hammer and dynobolts/screws should be tight to fit by hand but must be inserted all the way up to the shoulder of the body.
Hope this helps.
I like using concrete screws, like the Tapcon ones in the link below. I used them to anchor base plates in my basement concrete slab and for heavy-load shelves on brick walls.
You can get them at Home Depot or Lowes and they work great.
Good luck-

Use concrete anchors that are threaded internally to match the screw or bolt you are using. The anchors are sunk into holes that you drill with a masonry bit. When you screw the bolt into the anchor, the anchor will expand to snug up into the hole.
I'm a carpenter by trade and what we use when we do this kinda work is a tool called a (Rock Set) its a gun that shoots the nails into any kind of rock like brick.
