How do i correctly measure my window for an air conditioner?
Question:I am trying to by an ac but i do not want to buy one to big or small how do i measure my window for that. when i measure the width of my window open it is 2 feet 3 inches.
Answers:
open the window all the way and measure clear opening between the frame.
Some a/c's come with side wings, to cover the rest of the open window...look for them or you will be fabricating cardboard to cover the sides. You want one that will fit a window that's 27". Read the boxes at the store. I just bought a nice Fridgidair from Lowes, with the side wings, digital, remote control for $130. Not a bad deal.
Raise the bottom half of the window (If that is the part that you'll be putting the A/C in) and just measure the width and height of the opening. Take that rough opening measurement to the store with you, and they will find the best unit to suit you. They don't have to be extremely close to the same size~you can lower the window to make up for the height difference, and the A/C's have adjusting "fan-folding" pieces on both sides to make up for the width difference. You should also give the store the approximate size (Square footage) of the room ~or rooms~ you will be wanting to cool, so that you can get a unit tough enough to handle the job:)
Good Luck!!
Open the window completely. You'll need the width of the inside opening and the height of the actual open part of the window. Do not include any trim or other wood in this measurement.
When you buy the AC, make sure the dimensions are smaller than the window opening. Any gaps will be filled in by insulating panels and trim.
When you install it, get a friend to help. Sit it in the window and close to window down on the top. Make sure to secure the unit in the window frame securely with it leaning out just a little bit. This allows the water to drain to the outside and not inside the room.
