Repainting metal?
Question:Hello. I want to restain a dresser but I hate the drawer pulls. I tried to find new ones I like at Home Depot but the original ones are really old and so the screw holes are really far apart. So the only thing I guess I can do is repaint the old drawer pulls. Is there a good paint for this that won't chip because it's metal? Should I try to get the old paint off first? If so how? Thanks for any help!
Answers:
if your going to be painting them than you should start off by removing the old paint, either with a stripper of some kind or wire brush it off, then start over with a good primer so your paint will adhere to the metal better and not want to flake off, best bet is to spray paint them for even coverage, try some rustoleum, easy to find at Home Depot or any hardware store
Who says you have to paint them if they're metal? Maybe someone screwed it up and painted them. Put them in a small bucket with denatured alcohol till it all comes off. You can even paint them with a clear varnish or Polyurethane.
get some paint remover, then use a primer, like killz or something, then paint them. but make sure you get them as clean as possible.
i've repainted my cabinet handles b/c we were short on $ & didn't find anything i liked as well.
so they were wood & metal... I took coarse sand paper & scuffed up the metal & wood. Did this really good so that it felt smooth. Wiped off all the dust... then used KILZ on the metal part & used 2oz acrylic btls of paint from u'r craft or Walmart store & painted them. Then varnished the whole thing including the wood. SEVeral coats! Inbet. varnish (after the lst 2.) i use a black low coarse sand paper wet to sand to get the bums off the varnish ..wiped then dried & re-varnished. Did it several times. It really came out great! Everyone likes it & couldn't believe i painted them.
I've done the same for a friends dresser handles in a 2 tone to make it look antiqued.
You dont have to strip the paint off the pulls if it isn't chipping. You cant use a coarse sanding pad (60 grit should work) for the parts you can sand. Then spray them with a primer called XIM. You can buy it at paint stores and maybe Home Depot/Lowes. It will bond to any material. Many times it dosent look like it has covered, but it has.. Put 2 good coats on them and then sand them with a very fine sandpaper (120 grit will do or higher) Then apply your desired paint. That should work.
