Well if you kept them sealed in their original packaging, without using them at any point, in an airtight container, that would do it.

However if you do want to use them, don't eat of drink whilst using the pc, have clean hands, dust regularly and invest in a can of air to get the muck out from between the keys in the keyboard.

If you fancy spending more money you can get a dust cover for your keyboard though you'll still have to dust it so what's the point.
The number one reason for dirty keyboards and mice is eating while using the computer. If possible, avoid doing this. Then the only dirt is dust. I keep a little keyboard duster brush that looks like a little mop. Every day or two i'll brush off the screen and keyboard and mouse with it. This keeps everything free of dust. If you must eat by the computer, you will eventually need to get crumbs out of the keyboard. A can of compressed air is good to get crumbs out. Pulling all of the keys off of a standard keyboard and blowing out the crumbs once every 6 months isn't a terrible idea if you are willing to work that hard to keep it clean. I have done it before and I gotta say there is no better way to make an old keyboard look new. Of course wiping everything down with those electronics wipes soaked in rubbing alcohol is great for disinfecting everything without making everything sticky.
I use a little soft 2" craft paint brush and I also put windex on a cloth and wipe the perps clean. The canned air often has moisture in it and causes more problems.
You can turn you key board upside down and tap it and remove things the brush doesn't get.
Ah! seems I must be some sort of animal then, whenever I vaccum I use the small brush attachment and vaccum the keyboard too. (i do wonder whether one day I'll suck a key up though :-) I use a moist "wipe" to clean the keys and mouse now and then.
