Question:have it painted with black chalkboard paint for my grandson , however we use it as a coffee table and the style goes with my asian-botanical l.room. I can buy him another one to play with. I would like to give this table a asian black laquer look. Is this a big paint job. It looks like it could be tedious. I am not much of a painter, but would give it a try. looking for suggestions...

The first thing to do if you want to paint this table is to thoroughly clean it with TSP (trisodium phosphate). If you really want a lacquer look, the surface needs to be super smooth and you need to apply the paint and lacquer very smoothly.
Since you say you are not much of a painter, I would suggest the thorough cleaning. Sand as smooth as you can get it and use a matte or semi-gloss black spray paint.
An Asian theme does not require a lacquer finish. If it's not done well, it could really look bad. If you really do a great job with the spray paint, you can always put a lacquer over it. If the finish is less than perfect, you'll be happy that you didn't use high gloss or lacquer.
I think paint it with high gloss oil based paint and then seal it with clear laquer.
You have a couple options. Because of the chalkboard paint, you may have a problem covering up depending on what color you plan on painting it. If you can cover it up without having to prime it, then you could get a couple cans of spray paint to paint it.
leave the black on it, add some gold rub ons, then cover with several coats of clear finish.
its easy.
Try using a sponge roll, It'll be more easier & better.
