What is a good beginner woodworking wood?
Question:a wood that is fairly cheap that's easy to work with for a beginner.
Answers:
pine is cheap, available everywhere, and it's a soft wood, so there's less chance your saw will snag.
good luck! ; )
Balsa Wood?
Spruce is the cheapest here and is very easy to work with. Fir will give you a nicer finish grain for a bit more money and is a harder wood. It all depends on what you're making. You can go to oak or maple when you get more confidense and are willing to spend more. Good luck and have fun! That's the most important part!!
If you are carving, you can't beat balsa wood. It is soft and easy to work with, yet inexpensive.
Ifyou are building small gift projects, you are best to stick with pine. It is also soft and easy to work with, but very inexpensive. I have made boxes, toys, signs, plaques, clocks, etc. all with pine.
If you are making small furniture pieces, in the future, consider using plywoods and veneers.

Go to woodworkers.com and see what they have to offer. Another one is Miesel.com in the woodworking trade.
Pine.
I would agree with the man who first said POPLAR. It is a soft wood with hard wood characteristics. It is more stable and less apt to warp than any of the soft woods. Because of its stability, it is a wood that is often used as a base for veneers. If you plan to make something like a table or a chair, get what is called "quarter cut" regardless of what would you end up getting.
I would suggest that you get some books on cabinet making and working with wood - you will learn bundles
