How do you measure door casing trim /moulding?

Question:

Answers:
I think you are asking how to write the measures down on paper, if so then :

Let's see, if i measure a piece 6 feet and 4 inches long and 3 inches wide. Then that would be written as:

6 ft. 4 in. By 3 in.

6ft 4in X 3 in.
or
6'4" X 3"
( 'X' for "By", single quote for feet, double quote for inches)

How to measure to cut:
measure from inside corner left to inside corner right. Cut both ends from that measure on a 45 degree angle outward. The left side cut is 45 degrees from mark to the left. The right side is 45 degrees from mark to the right.
Measure down, inside again from corner to floor for each. Cut bottom straight cut, cut tops 45 degree angle again.

You would need the highth X 2 + the width..allow for the thickness of the trim.....say it is 4" wide you would enclude that with your highth and width..
use a normal measuring tape
First, you want a 1/4 reveal around the door. Meaning you should have a 1/4 inch space around the door before the moulding goes on...so 1/4 inch of wall shows inside the moulding.

I always mark the 1/4 inch points at the top corners of the door opening. Then measure from each corner mark to the floor or baseboard moulding and install the long side pieces first.
Then measure the distance in between the two side moulding sections and cut the top center section.

Remember... 45 degree miters on all corners.
you might need to be more specific. if your talking about cutting and putting it on. you first measure 3/8" down from the top of the jam on both sides and mark then you measure from the floor to the top at the mark you just made. measure your trim and mark it cut a 45 degree angle so that the cut is is making the trim longer from the mark. do that for both side and put your sides on. once you have your sides on then measure the top piece and cut the same way on both ends. then put that one on. ps when putting your trim on only put the nails in enough to hold the trim that way you can make adjustments if needed after you have everything were you want it then drive the nails all the way.
If you go to the Commercial sales desk at your local Lowe's store, ask a commercial specialist to give you the blue plan catalog with all of the casing and base in it. All of the profiles are in it so you can match your existing. Ranch, teardrop, 356OG are to name a few. If you have a 32" interior door, you can buy a kit with 2 legs and a head pc in a kit. It takes alot of the guess work out of it. For example.. casing will be measured by width (2 1/4) by 11/16". It would read on the label...2 1/4"X11/16" casing. One step further.you can get it in MDF which is Medium Density Fiberboard, Primed which is prepainted and in most solid woods of your choice. MDF is more flexible to deal with in the event that you do not have a square wall to work with. Ask a Millwork Specialist at your local Lowe's Store for more details. They will be glad to assist you! Good Luck
