How do you saw mitre joints on crown molding?
Question:outside corner
Answers:
There are several ways to cut the joints required for crown molding. The advantage of using a compound miter saw, however, is that the molding does not have to be tilted up against the saw fence or cut with the aid of a specially constructed jig. Instead, it can be cut as it lays flat on the saw table. This Old House general contractor Tom Silva shows one easy method for cutting a compound miter joint for crown molding.
(complete with video at web site!)
use a mitre box
thats right get you a miter box from your area hardware store. ask the salesman how to place the molding in the box
Can you think upside down and backwards?
Crown mold has 2 profiles cut into the back to aid in postioning with in a mitre box/saw. How you position the crown will be the final cut.
Hey , I do taste testers with scrap, corners are not perfect, you may have to adjust your cut's. hence finish carpenter.
Use a compound miter saw. Set the molding up so that the edge that along the wall is on the fence of the saw and the edge that is along the ceiling is against the table of the saw. Then turn your compound miter saw 45 degrees to the left or right keeping it perpendicular to the table. Make the cut.
extremely difficult without a mitre saw. hold the piece of molding against the back of the saw table the exact way that it will go up. Example- crown molding has three edges to the back of it (one side to the wall, one side in dead air, and one side touching the ceiling). the side that touches the wall is the side that should be up against the fence of the mitre saw. when starting your cut, begin by cutting at least a 1/4 inch away from your mark towards the cut off and inching back to your mark
Use sample pieces of molding while you adjust your angles.
If you set the miter saw at 45 degrees, both ends may not quite fit, so cut the facing one at 46 or 47 degrees. This is called back-cutting.
Then fill with wood putty as required.
The way I do it involves making 3 or 4 wrong cuts first.
