Knocking Pipes?

Question:I hear constant knocking coming from some pipes in the bathroom... When the toilet is flushed or water runs in the sink, the knocking stops! What can cause this?? please help ;)

Answers:
Water hammer could be the cause.
Water hammer is caused by too much pressure, or quick closed valves like a ballcock on a toilet.
Many current codes require hammer arrestors. They are copper tubes that absorb the shock of water being quickly shut off.
Go to http://www.siouxchief.com/frm_ms.cfm... they offer a hammer arrestor for a toilet that will help the whole bathroom (cold only)
It could also just be the ballcock in the toilet. Sometimes ballcocks will continue to "bounce" the water. I would change that first it's the cheaper first option.
There are many possibilities though. Don't touch your water heater you'll be opening a can of worms with the T&P valve being opened. Sometimes they don't reclose and start to leak and have to be changed
Hope that helps

Water hammer. You need to make sure your pipes are straped correctly under your house to prevent them from moving.
You need to bulp the hot water tank. On the tank there is a pipe on the side with a little value pull it up until a steady stream of water comes out this will let the air out of the tank. This should do the trick.

The old solutions ( draining the air out of the systme, or that shock absorber pipe) are only temporary fixes to the problem - the real problem is in the design phase. However, the best solution to your problem would be to install a Water Hammer Arresters - maybe a pressure regulator too so you can reduce the pressure if it is really high - keeping it low to avoid some of the power in the hammer, but still high enough to supply your home. Check out these sites... pretty much info on this topic .. .with solutions

Go with PEB's answer, and don't mess with the water heater. The water hammer arrestor is your best bet.
