Is it possible to drill mounting holes on the edge of my table saw's cast iron extension wings (tables)?

Question:I want ot remove the left table extension and mount it (attach it) to the existing right table extension but to do so I will need to drill 4 mounting holes (5/16" in diameter). Can I do this at home or do I need to take the teable extensions to a machine shop?

Answers:
sheba has it right but you will want to start with a smaller pilot hole and work up to desired hole size...

The problem with drilling cast iron is heat. If you proceed real slowly, and keep the area soaked in oil, you should be O.K. Remember: Cast iron is very hard. Use a good carbide bit.
Any heat build up will cause your wing to crack. If this happens, you can get it welded.
Do it at home. Hold the extension to the right side and mark were the holes will be with a pencil. Use a center punch and hammer to dimple the table at your pencil marks. Buy a 5/16 tap from your local hardware store and buy the drill bit that corresponds [ the drill size will be marked on the taps packaging] and buy the screws that have the same thread pattern as the tap.. Drill your hole using oil as a lubricant [best if you had a drill press but not necessary]. Slowly run your tap in and out going in further each time.
