How do you build build-in storage in the walls?

Question:I plan on cutting out the drywall to put in some shelves in our living room. Can someone tell me the right way to do this? the wall is the outside wall, so I was also wondering if this will have an effect on my electric bill?

Answers:
Oh Yea, You bet it will effect you heating, and cooling bills. There will be no insulation in those areas. Another problem is if there are any electrical wires in the wall.
I really don't suggest doing this, just leave the drywall, and put up some bookshelves.

I'm not sure but if it were me I would build my unit then I'd open the wall, and insulate this very well.
Install my shelf unit I build and secure it. I'd also use a sillocone sealer to seal the area around the shelf unit to the wall in case of moisture or anything of this nature - especially air leaks.

Last, I attach any decorative molding to the wall unit.
You should also use the sealer around all of the back of the self unit joints - these will be facing the exterior wall directly once installed so I would seal them from air leaks also.
You will lose energy by removing insulation from an exterior wall. You would be better off installing the shelves/bookcase on your existing wall.

Good luck
