What does M3 (or M4, M5, M6 etc) mean interms of a machine screw?

Question:I have to find longer machine screws then some that I already have, but I need to make sure that they have a diameter of 3mm.

Answers:
Just refers to thread size of the screw/bolt, M3 is 3mm, M4 is 4mm etc.

The numbers cast on the top refer to tensile strength for future reference.

For a good source of screws and fittings etc screwfix.com

The screws will be described as M3 x "length in mm". An M3 machine screw is a 60 degree symmetrical screw thread with an ISO 68 designated profile. It has a nominal size of 3mm and a pitch of 0.5 for the course thread. This is the American National Standard M-profile.
these come in various lengths as m3 or m4 just refers to the size of the threads on the screw and if you need longer ones..all you have to do is ask for m3 by 1/2 or m3 by 3/4 or m3 by 1 inch or longer
refers to thread size the bigger the number the bigger the thread
