How does one sew a zipper into a poketbook, handbag, or purse?

Whatever you are putting the zipper into...you must make your zipper before sewing all of the pieces together just as if it were a pattern. Make sure you pull the material with the zipper while you are sewing, if you don't it will gather too fast on top. Make sure you use the zipper foot as someone else suggested.
Cut a piece of material the length of the zipper you want. You will need to add about 2 inches to the over all length. The width should be twice the amount you need to the center. you do this because you will fold this material before you sew it to the zipper. You will do this for both sides. Let the material overhang to the center of the zipper before sewing it down. This will help hide the appearance of the zipper. Depending on if you have zippers the correct length or if you have a roll of zipper material will determine if you need a stop for the zipper as well. Now that you have this complete you can sew it into the appropriate place in your project.
Okay, here's the tricky part. Sew the zipper into the fabric BEFORE it is put into the purse.
Make sure you are using the " Zipper Foot" on your sewing machine - it is really narrow for those tight spaces, also move your needle to the left or right to align it ( usually the needle is set to the middle)
