Im building a deck, what spans can I place my beams?
Question:I plan to use 2x12's for the beams and 2x10's for the joists, how far apart do I need to place the beams, I plan to put the joists on 16" centers, the deck will be free standing.

I am looking at the CABO ONE and TWO FAMILY DWELLING CODE book and it is universal thoughout the united states.
If you are useing treated lumber, the wood will be southern yellow pine and the Modulus of Elasticity for it is 1.6.
Twin 2" x 12" beams should be no more than 8 ' 4" between supports or post.
The 2' x 10' floor joist on 16" O.C. can span 16' 5" but I would keep it down to 16' because there would be a lot of waist if you purchased 18'.
If your deck isn't going to be that large,
you can use 2" x 8" joist and reach out to 12' 10" and use 2" x 10" s for the beams and keep the beams at 8 feet between post.

The rule I used was; One and a half times the thickness of the joist. If using a 2x10,, then 10 feet plus half of that = 15 feet between beams. If using 2x8 joists, then 8 feet plus half of that = 12 feet between beams. These are maximum spans. I always used 2 foot overhangs past the beams.

how big is your deck going to be? i recently built one 28x14. i placed 2 sets of beams. 8 ft, 8 ft and 10 ft joists with 10 ft in the center. it is very sturdy, no bounce at all. i also put 2 support posts on each beam. 4 ft off ledger and 4 ft off rim joist.
You can easily span 10' with your 2x10 joists 16" o.c. I wouldn't span past 12 feet, however.
Joists meaning to add a Roof?
If so, there can't be an answer here about Length, but certainly as with the decing material support beams at 16, the Joists can be 16 or 24 on center. It's pretty obvious that those 2 choices relate to sheet material widths and lenghts, IE: 4x8 Roofing or 2x whatever deck surface base.
Beams: meaning support posts? IE: 4 x 4's? Or the beams bolted to the support posts that will be the base of the decking material? OR Roof beams?

AJA has the idea. At the Lowes website they have a project planner, that includes deck construction. You fill in the dimensions you want and it gives you the plans and materials list. It will even tell you how to cut the stringers for your stairs.
What is the size of the deck you plan to build, how high off the ground and are you planning on crossbracing? Things that are needed to know before an accurate answer can be given. At any eight you shouldnt span any further than 8feet from center of beam to center of next beam.
