How do I tension spring gate closers?

Question:The device is a simple spring fixed on the door and the jam but the removable spigots jump out when I try to tension it with the tool provided

Answers:
I take it that the springs are the black japanned ones, Some times instead of using the kit supplied a fine ended nail punch goes into the holes better for adjustment. And is easier to hold. One point is, you say the pins come out . It seems to me that you may be putting the tension on the wrong way in that case the pins will jump out, As the tension goes on, the pin gets tighter all the time and sometimes gets very hard to put the last adjustment on.Only turn the adjuster one hole at a tme.It also depends on what side the door is hung , as you look at the spring one pin is on one side at the top and the other is on the opposite one at the bottom,so they work against each other.Sorry this is long. I Hope this helps you ,good luck.

It's simple, but it's like trying to explain how to tie a knot: I can't really explain it using a keyboard.
Just look at it and see how it works, then it'll come to you.
there should be holes in the top of spring put a nail punch or something like that in and turn pull out pin and put in higher tension hole.
