I've done this myself, Its pretty easy. Put the AC in the window in the ordinary fashion. Slide the window over to make sure its secure. Measure the space between the top of the window and the top of th AC. This is the void you have to fill.
Get a sheet thin luan plywood. Cut 2 pieces that will fill the void. Configure it so it will fit into the slot of the window frame on one side, and either into the slot or around the frame of the sliding piece. Make a sandwich with the two pieces of Ply with some foam insulation as the meat. attach to the Frame, Air Conditioner, and slider as best as you can. Screws are the best, don't rely on the window pressure.
Seal the edges with a good tape. Use curtains or blinds to cover up the ugly board on the inside, but you may want to paint the outside or put a curtain decal or something so it doesn't look like a sharecroppers cabin
use a piece of plywood or plexiglass over the top of your air conditioner unit that is the same width as the left over window opening. That should work fine...make sure it's snugly fitted.
