How can I get old formica off a countertop so I can replace it? The top itself is in really good shape.?
Question:I have a really small 2nd kitchen in the back of my house. I want to replace the old formica countertop which has burns and stains on it. The structure itself is in great shape and I would like to tile the top and back splash. I think I can do this myself, but don't know how to get the cheap formica off it? Any advise? Thanks JoAnn

Leave the old formica on. Cover with 1/4 inch plywood (Be sure to glue and screw down securly) and do new formica over the plywood...

Most countertop laminates are held down by contact cement. This makes removal almost impossible. I would rough it up and install new over the top of the old.
If it is rolltop formica, it is screwed down with 1-1/4" screws. Take them out and remove. If the countertop is built in, a crowbar is the logical answer, but use care. Don't just go tearing through. Take your time, do it right. Don't stop your prep work until you have bare cabinets, free of nails, etc. You may need to replace your deadwood if you tear the tops out . Use common sense.
