Garage door opener?
Question:We have recently installed a 7' garage door. We want to install an automatic door opener. Our ceiling is 10' high. Need ideas on how to install opener.
Answers:
you will need to go to lowes or home depot or somewhere and buy some punch angle in 10' sticks. also get some nuts and bolts. What they supply with the opener sucks. go to center of door. above door you should probably have a torsion spring. In middle of door place nose bracket 2" above spring. with assembled operator attatch rail to bracket. have one person on ladder hold opener up and raise door. Lay a 2x4 down flat on top of door and set opener ontop of it. From there attatch punche angle to studs or rafters then down to opener. you might have to put a piece in between drops for support. wire opener up.
Also make sure you have a strut across the top of door for support. Attatch bracket to door below strut. When attatching the arm get at least two bolt hole lined up to as close of a ninety degree angle as possible then lean back a little. this will help protect door. Check instructions on running wires to make sure you hook up right depending on brand.
I dont know if you have bought an opener but i recomend a liftmaster belt drive. You get a lifetime warranty on belt and motor. If not that go with a craftsman or anything made by the chamberlain group. Genies and most others are junk
The installation instructions are in the box the opener comes in.
Follow the directions carefully, if you have difficulties there should be an 8xx number to call for assistance. Good Luck. And if you installed a metal door, besure to install stiffeners prior to using the opener or it will bend it like a tin can.
I have installed several before and it took many trips to the hardware store. The hardest part was installing the ceiling brackets and support hardware. Did I say it was hot weather?
It's worth the money to have a pro do it unless you have a couple of days with nothing to do.
Most openers give you the L brackets to suspend the opener from the ceiling. If they are not long enough you can purchase longer ones at most good hardware stores
Follow instructions carefully and to start with the door should open easily by hand without opener. Mounting the arm to the door is critical. After you have the opener installed try it without connecting to door first to get sn idea of the range of travel to be adjusted then turn the up and down pressure adjusting screws to least pressure and adjust thes to just raise and lower the door without excess pressure. You should be Ok but remembe dont connect the door initally or you bend or break something like been there and done that.
