What is an easy way to lighten the finish on wood?

Question:I would like the finish to be a couple of shades lighter. It is a small item.

Answers:
You can find wood bleach at most hardware stores. Usually located by re-finishing products. Sometimes in the wood flooring department.

To lighten the wood you need to first remove the old finish. Afterall, it was there to protect the wood, so lighteners won't be able to get through. As mentioned above, there are wood lighteners. I've even used diluted bleach but it was more bother than money saving--far more sanding afterwards.

Maybe your wood piece could be lightened with a good cleaning. Try making a strong tea solution....2 bags per cup instead of one. Let the tea cool then dip a clean white cloth in the tea, wring out and wipe down furniture. Another option is to mix 1/4 cup vinegar in 1 quart water and use this to wipe down the wood. Of the commercial cleaners, Dozey is what is used in fine furniture stores.
Strip and sand until old color is gone. The amount of sanding you have to do will be determined by how deep previous color has penetrated.
If your able to do this, just sand it with a mild sandpaper and restain it the desired color!
