Avoid using a product called "playsand" that is sold in landscaping stores. It is the product of mining tailings and can contain asbestos. Also avoid the use of wood treated with Arsenic (used in some decking).
Real sand is best, but it is a good idea to get a cover for the pit or all the cats in the community will use it as a kitty box.

buy a plastic pond liner ,drill loadsa holes in the bottom for drainage and fill it with soft sand
some people buy a plastic fish pond, put it in the ground and fill it with playpit, a.k.a. silver, sand.
ordinary builders' sand will stain clothing.
it's best to cover it over with something when not in use, such as a sheet of plywood, to prevent cats, dogs, foxes etc. from using it as a toilet (as they surely will.) It also keeps it dry.
Whatever you do keep cats out of it, Next door's children got worms from cats using their sandpit as a toilet

whatever you do make sure it has a lid, or every cat in the neighbourhood will visit it in a vary unpleasant way!

dont waste your time and money ..its better and cheaper to go to somewhere like ARGOS ..TOYS ARE US DEFINATELY SELL THEM ...THEY ARE NORMALY PLASTIC ..AND HAVE A LID if you build one in the ground ..the sand will always feel wet ..put a weight on the lid to prevent the wind blowing it off
Buy or build one with a lid, and get play sand.
Cats love these to use as a toilet.
I am sure you don't want you daughter to share it with the local moggies.
Just build a sandbox and put the type of sand you want into it. Advice from one who has done it would be that you have to have some sort of cover to keep the cats out or your child will be playing in cat poopy.
