How do I make a pre-existing hole in cabinet larger?
Question:I have some holes drilled into the my custom cabinetry that are to be used for running wires between AV equipment. I was wiring everything up and found that the holes are too small so I need to make them bigger. They're probably 2inches wide right now and I need to double it.
I'm afraid to use a standard hold driller because it assumes that you have something to that the drill can bite into, whereas I have a hole where there would normally be wood.
Any suggestions? P.S. the wood is about 2.5 inches thick.

you use what's called a doughnut... drill a hole in a 3/4" piece of wood the size you want it to be using a hole saw... screw this on the cabinet and use the same hole saw to fix your problem...
you can use a steel file which you can buy at any hardware stores or if you are low on budget you can use rough sandpaper roll it on a round pipe that would fit your hole and use it as a steel file
you could buy a hole saw. They are available in many sizes up to and beyond the size you meed. You could also try what is called a key hole saw. A key hole saw is a small hand saw used to cut holes in wood.
Your going to need a sawzaw with a 6 inch wood blade. Your not going to be able to get a perfect hole like you would with the hole cutter blade with bit. this is your quickest, easiest solution. If your crafty you could make a jig to screw to the side of the cabinet to hold a 4 in circular cutter blade with bit. good luck
If you get your auger going very gently assuming you have a drill that goes as fast as you pull trigger, gently rock from side to side, once you have made your track use direct pressure DOWNWARD rocking gently

Prop4u is dead on. This method will provide the best results for your situation. That is, if you have a 4" hole saw. If not , I would invest in one for this. Drill your 4" hole in a piece of 3/4" material and use two screws to screw that board with the hole over the hole in the cabinet. So once this is done you will have a guide for your 4" hole saw to enlarge your hole. Seeing that your material is 2.5" thick, you might have to take your guide off and repeat the process to the other side. Be sure to line it up the same on the other side. Good Luck
you can use a circular hole drill bit...put the one that matches your current hole to stabilize the drilling,, and on top of it add the one you want to drill to!! example,,,,
put a two" hole drill on your setup,, then the size you want to increase too,, THEN put on the nut and tighten it down! usually the smaller hole bits are longer than the larger holed ones so you can use the smaller as a guide!
Use a template to scribe a line around the existing hole to the diameter you would like it to be then using a jig saw cut around the line
prop4u is right. You could also just drill another 2" hole in another location for the rest of you wire feeds.
