Do you think it would be fairly simple to make my own crib skirt, pillow, and bumper?

Question:I found a McCall's pattern that makes all of the basics, but I don't have much skill at sewing. My mother-in-law made a crib blanket and I am having trouble finding solid colored seperates. Everything is gingham (scream)! any other suggestions...please

Hi you'll be fine! Especially for the crib skirt as that doesn't really require much skill.

Pillows are easy--basically you cut 2 pieces of matching sized fabric, and sew them "inside out" the side that you want to show outside--would be the inside in this case.

Sew it all up--and then leave a few inches on one side, push in a pillow form & sew up by hand as best you can on the open edge. A pillow case is really easy too--just sew the edges on one side with a basic flat stich (Literally just reg. sewing). & then sew up the sides--you will want to turn it inside out too.

As for the Bumper, it seems that its just a fabric covered pad correct? So make a long narrow "pillow case", fill in the pads--I'm sure you can get some plastic covered ones at walmart or another fabric supply store. & then use double sided velcro to do them up.

Just remember its only sewing, and if you mess it up, you can cut the thread & start again! All 3 projects are really simple, I mean they will take work & you'll have to be careful with them.

But you can do them!!

For the amount of time and cost of fabric, you may as well purchase the entire crib set. I purchased a beautiful set at Walmart under $40. I say buy it.
I think I may have made the McCall's pattern described years ago when I was a new sewer--it was relatively easly--the only glitch I came across was sewing through the padded bumper--I also noticed my finished bumper was much bulkier and heavier than the store bought variaty--definitely better quality. But it took time to make. I was able to force my machine to sew through it but it was a little hard to do--had to pull and sew at the same time. It was worth the time. You can save time on the bumper by buying some ribbon instead of making the little ties yourself--I made my own and ribbon would've been just as nice.Everyone liked it. If you don't have the time then buy one. (but you won't have the satisfaction of your own custom made set)
