Figuring sand for an above ground pool?

Question:we are setting up our 27 in above ground pool and I need sand for it. I already brought in 1 ton and need to figure how much more sand I need. The area it is going on is relatively level. It says I need 94 cubic feet but how can I convert that to tons needed?

Answers:
If you are trying to have a 4 inch layer then 94 cubic feet covers a 19 foot circle or for a 20 to 24 foot diameter pool you would be putting down a 2 to 3 inch layer. That sounds large for only a 27 inch deep pool so you may want to double check the numbers before you bring in a lot more sand.

Assuming 94 cubic feet is the correct amount then if you brought in 1 ton of sand, you probably got between 16 and 22 cubic feet, depending on how wet or dry and how loose or packed it was. Sand that is wet and packed can weigh as much as 130 pounds per cubic foot or loose and dry as little as 90 pounds per cubic foot.

Often sand and other landscaping materials are sold by the "yard" or cubic yard, which is 27 cubic feet. So 94 cubic feet would be about 3.5 cubic yards.

So you have between .6 and .8 cubic yards now and should need another 2.7 to 2.9 yards more. Or in tons you would need another 4 to 6 tons.

Dry sand weighs approx 100 pounds per cubic foot. If you need 94 cubic feet, that would equal 9400 pounds, or roughly 5 tons. That's a lot of sand!
sand is need to keep roots and rocks from poking through the pool liner when the water compacts the dirt. You need three to four inches of sand to accomplish this. You wrote 27 inch pool, if that is the case, you have plenty of sand.
the weight of the sand is never constant.. thats why its measured in yards 1 ton of dry sand is more in volume then 1 ton of wet or damp sand..
one cubic foot of sand more or less weighs 100 pouinds
one yard is 27 cubic ft.. so depending on the about of moisture in the sand... could be 2400 pounds to 3000 pounds per yard..
so the best way to measure is mutiply both sides by the depth of the ..
example.. 10 ft by 10 ft is 100 ft.. times the depth of 2 ft
equals 200 sq ft.. divided by 27..the sq st feet in a yard..
or about 7 1/2 yards of sand

hope that helps.
a bit of advice just in cause you have cats, even if you dont i'm sure the neighborhood cats will find you.so i recommend getting a couple rolls of that outdoor carpet, you can find it at costco for cheap only like $25 bucks for a big roll.
set up your pool then cut the carpet to snuggly fit around the pool this way the carpet is cooler than sand when its hot easy to sweep off and is the clean part to your new giant litter box that you didnt really want im sure, plus it helps for less traffic of dirt into the pool,i would also keep a bucket of water at the base of your pool to rinse off your feet first before you enter,it really helps.
